Why you'd want to live in Calabasas

About Calabasas The homes generally range between 2000 and 5000 square feet. Calabasas started as agricultural and ranch land. In the 1920’s and 1930’s Hollywood and Industry Icons built vacation homes in the Malibu Canyon area off of Las Virgenes and Mulholland. The King Gillette Ranch now open with a Visitor Center is a good example. Some of these homes and others including the area along Stunt Road were used for filming Westerns. Additionally the Park Moderne area (now commonly referred to as the Bird Streets) became popular as an artists’ colony. • Calabasas was originally part of Los Angeles city. It developed as a suburb in the late 1960s with the burgeoning Defense and Aerospace Industry in the San Fernando Valley. Homes in the Mulwood and Calabasas Lake neighborhoods represent that era. The local school district expanded to serve the families of the engineers and scientists in the Defense and Aerospace Industry and became known for strong Math and Science programs. In the early 1980’s as the Warner Center expanded the early Calabasas gated communities such as The Ridge and Vista Pointe were built possibly influenced by Hidden Hills just across the freeway. Land was still comparatively inexpensive so the homes were built on lots of 1/3 to ½ acre. Into the late 1980’s and early 1990’s more gated communities such as Mountain View, Westridge, Bellagio and Calabasas Park Estates joined the Calabasas landscape. They were followed more recently by Calabasas Hills, the Oaks and Mont Calabasas which was recently annexed. Calabasas became its own city in 1991. What's the Neighborhood Like? Calabasas is an eclectic mix of suburban homes and gated communities adjacent to Parkway Calabasas and rural, horse properties along Mulholland and Las Virgenes. New residents are attracted to the high performing schools in the Las Virgenes school district so the proportion of families with school age children is high. The temperate weather allows for sports and recreation year
