One of the reasons this area is so well known was due to the Sherman Oaks Galleria, which was eventually torn down after it was damaged by an earthquake in 1994. In its heyday, it was a shopping mall where ‘valley girls’ would meet. This became a label known across the country; in part due to the movie “Valley Girl.” Residents may still enjoy shopping as the Galleria was replaces by more retail venues. In addition, there is the Westfield Fashion Square and a variety of boutiques and restaurants on Ventura Boulevard.
In addition the amenities on Ventura Boulevard, residents of Sherman Oaks real estate may enjoy the Dixie Canyon Park. Above the San Fernando Valley, this park is 20 acres that was donated to the Conservancy in 1986 by the actor, Warren Beatty. The park is accessible from the San Fernando Valley. Going south on Dixie Canyon Avenue for .8 mile and taking a left on Dixie Canyon Place, continuing for .1 mile will lead visitors to the end of a cul-de-sac where stairs lead to the entrance. A hiking trail goes up the center of the canyon.
